Yasuhisa Kohyama è nato nel 1936 a Shigaraki, importante centro di produzione della ceramica in Giappone. All’età di quindici anni Kohyama inizia il suo percorso di ceramista lavorando in una delle più grandi fabbriche di ceramica a Shigaraki, Oumi Kagaku Touki. Negli anni successivi frequenta una scuola di formazione per imparare le tecniche elementari e in seguito collabora con designer, architetti per importanti progetti.
Nel 1973 avvia la sperimentazione delle sue tecniche di taglio e cottura e, nello stesso anno, la sua prima mostra personale al Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Department di Tokyo, fu un grande successo. Le sue opere sono esposte in Giappone presenti nelle collezioni a livello internazionale nei principali musei tra cui, The Metropolitan Museum of Art e The Museum of Art and Design a New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art.
